Description

Begin with a scenic drive through historic Hilo town, passing its charming waterfront before continuing to the former fishing village of Kalapana. A National Park Service–certified guide provides expert commentary on the volcanology, geology, and cultural history of Kilauea, pointing out notable lava flows and the native plants and wildlife along the way. Kalapana, along with nearby Kaimu Beach, was destroyed by lava during past eruptions.

Walk across a dramatic lava field to reach a newly formed black sand beach. Visit the Star of the Sea Painted Church, a decommissioned church twice relocated by the community in 1990 to save it from encroaching lava. This historic site now holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

Continue to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, the island’s natural centerpiece. Highlights include the Kilauea Visitor Center, Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, and the steaming sulfur bluffs. Pause at the renowned Volcano House for sweeping views of Kilauea Caldera, then take a short hike to see cracks and sinkholes left behind by the powerful 2018 eruption. The tour includes dinner.
