Description

Arlington National Cemetery stands among the capital’s most significant landmarks, serving as the final resting place for more than 400,000 service members and their families. With such a vast and deeply symbolic landscape, the most meaningful way to experience it is with a private guide who knows the stories of the heroes, statespeople, and presidents buried here.

This three-hour tour begins at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, where you learn how generations of servicewomen shaped the nation’s military history. A tram ride (tickets included) carries your group uphill, setting the stage for a comfortable downhill walking route that reveals the cemetery’s sweeping views and remarkable history.

Over more than 150 years, Arlington has become a place of honor for iconic American figures. Your guide shares the stories of President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, General George Marshall, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and General Philip Sheridan as you visit their gravesites. The tour also highlights lesser-known but equally compelling resting places, including boxer Joe Louis and the astronauts of the Columbia and Challenger space shuttles.

A section of the walk focuses on the history of Arlington House and the life of General Robert E. Lee, whose former estate became the foundation of today’s cemetery. This context provides a powerful connection between the Civil War era and the site’s evolution into a national symbol of service and sacrifice.

Your tour concludes at one of the cemetery’s most profound locations: the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Here, you witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony and learn about the immense efforts to identify fallen service members whose names remain unknown. It’s a solemn yet compelling tribute—a moment many visitors consider the most memorable part of their time at Arlington National Cemetery.
